Getting the Most From America's Classrooms

An estimated 1.2 million students drop out of American schools every year. Gallup's research has shown that hope, engagement, and wellbeing are key factors that drive grades, achievement scores, and future employment.
According to the latest findings of the Gallup Student Poll, more than half of the students in America's schools are hopeful -- a measurement of how students think, feel, and act in regard to their lives. The remaining students are stuck or discouraged, lacking the ideas and energy they need to solve problems and reach goals.
Students' levels of hope, engagement, and wellbeing are reflected every day in the classroom. Schools need more than measures of the academic work of students. They also need metrics that illustrate a bigger picture and provide a leading indicator of educational success.
In 2009, Gallup launched a partnership with America's Promise Alliance to track the hope, engagement, and wellbeing of students in grades 5 through 12 across the United States, free of charge in public schools. Through a Web-based survey administered in schools, the Gallup Student Poll gathers sound; actionable data that can help explain and address the graduation crisis. These metrics create the connection between what is happening in schools to the wider community and also adds a new perspective on teacher quality and school climate.
