Gallup Daily: Tracking Election 2008

Based on polling conducted Feb. 22-24, 2008

PRINCETON, NJ -- Gallup Poll Daily tracking interviews conducted Feb. 22-24 continue to show Barack Obama with a slight lead over Hillary Clinton in national Democratic preferences (47% to 45%).

The new, wider lead John McCain opened up over Mike Huckabee last week in national Republican preferences continues to hold. After leading Huckabee by 22 to 34 percentage points at various times after Mitt Romney's departure from the race, McCain's lead widened to 40 points in Gallup's Feb. 18-20 interviewing, reported last Thursday.

The latest three day rolling average finds 63% of Republican and Republican-leaning voters supporting McCain, compared with 21% backing Huckabee -- a 42-point lead for McCain. -- Lydia Saad

Methodology: Gallup is interviewing no fewer than 1,000 U.S. adults nationwide each day during 2008. The results reported here are based on combined data from Feb. 22-24, 2008, including interviews with 954 Republican and Republican-leaning voters, and 1,294 Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters. For results based on these samples, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points. In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.
