Gallup Daily: Clinton 46%, Obama 45%

Based on polling conducted March 5-7, 2008

PRINCETON, NJ -- The latest Gallup Poll Daily tracking of national Democratic voters' presidential nomination preferences finds Hillary Clinton (46%) and Barack Obama (45%) in a virtual deadlock.

Clinton had held a 4-point advantage over Obama in each of the last three releases (March 2-4 through March 4-6). Obama moved closer after a more favorable showing Friday night. The two candidates have been in a tight battle in recent weeks. In only a few of the releases since Feb. 13-15 has either candidate enjoyed a statistically significant lead. The largest in either direction was an 8-point Obama advantage in Feb. 28-March 1 polling.

The candidates are battling Saturday in the Wyoming caucuses, and on Tuesday the Mississippi primary takes place. The next contest will be the crucial Pennsylvania primary on April 22. -- Jeff Jones

Methodology: Gallup is interviewing no fewer than 1,000 U.S. adults nationwide each day during 2008. The results reported here are based on combined data from March 5-7, 2008, including interviews with 1,258 Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters. For results based on these samples, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points. In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.
