Gallup Daily: Heightened Economic Gloom Persists

Based on polling conducted April 11-13, 2008

PRINCETON, NJ -- Gallup's daily update on consumer perceptions of the economy finds 86% of Americans saying economic conditions are getting worse, and 43% rating current conditions as "poor." Both measures are one percentage point off the most negative in Gallup Poll Daily tracking this year.

Gallup computes a summary measure that combines these two measures, which currently shows 79% of Americans with a negative economic outlook -- perceiving conditions are only fair or poor, and seeing them as getting worse or staying the same. That matches the 2008 high from March 12-14 on the combined measure. -- Jeff Jones

Survey Methods

For the Gallup Poll Daily tracking survey, Gallup is interviewing no fewer than 1,000 U.S. adults nationwide each day during 2008. The economic questions analyzed in this report are asked of a random half-sample of respondents. The results reported here are based on combined data from 1,494 interviews conducted April 11-13, 2008. For results based on this sample, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points. In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.
