Gallup Daily: Obama 50%, Clinton 44%

PRINCETON, NJ -- Gallup Poll Daily tracking of national Democratic voters from May 12-14 finds Barack Obama favored for the nomination by a six percentage point margin over Hillary Clinton, 50% to 44%.

The field period includes one day of interviewing following the May 13 West Virginia Democratic primary that Clinton won by a landslide. However, Gallup's May 14 results show no immediate movement toward Clinton in national Democratic preferences.

The fall election continues to look very close. Obama and John McCain are tied among national registered voters at 45%. Clinton's three-point edge over McCain, 48% vs. 45%, is within the poll's margin of error. -- Lydia Saad

Survey Methods

For the Gallup Poll Daily tracking survey, Gallup is interviewing no fewer than 1,000 U.S. adults nationwide each day during 2008.

The Democratic nomination results are based on combined data from May 12-14, 2008. For results based on this sample of 1,234 Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points.

The general election results are based on combined data from May 10-14, 2008. For results based on this sample of 4,372 registered voters, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±2 percentage points.

In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.
