Gallup Daily: Preferences Unchanged in Latest Update

Obama maintains 2-point advantage over McCain

PRINCETON, NJ -- The latest Gallup Poll Daily tracking update finds Barack Obama continuing to hold a slight advantage over John McCain in the presidential election trial heat, 46% to 44%.

These results are based on interviews conducted July 6-8 with more than 2,600 registered voters nationwide, and match the figures from Tuesday's report. They reflect the general state of the race since Obama clinched the Democratic nomination in early June, with the Illinois senator holding a slight advantage over McCain. (To view the complete trend since March 7, 2008, click here.)

Voter preferences appear to be quite stable at this time. Since June 24-26 polling, when the candidates were even at 44%, the percentage favoring Obama has ranged from 46% to 48% while the percentage preferring McCain has varied between 42% and 44%. -- Jeff Jones

Survey Methods

For the Gallup Poll Daily tracking survey, Gallup is interviewing no fewer than 1,000 U.S. adults nationwide each day during 2008.

The general-election results are based on combined data from July 6-8, 2008. For results based on this sample of 2,666 registered voters, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±2 percentage points.

Interviews are conducted with respondents on land-line telephones (for respondents with a land-line telephone) and cellular phones (for respondents who are cell-phone only).

In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.
