PRINCETON, NJ -- Barack Obama continues to hold a slight advantage over John McCain in the latest Gallup Poll Daily tracking presidential election trial heat update, 46% to 43%.
These results are based on interviews conducted July 7-9 with more than 2,600 registered voters nationwide, and are little changed. Both candidates are actively out on the campaign trail, and news media continue to devote substantial resources to coverage of the campaign, but there is little sign at this point in the summer that voters are radically shifting in their perspective on the race. Since June 24-26 polling, when the candidates were even at 44%, the percentage favoring Obama has ranged minimally from 46% to 48% while the percentage preferring McCain has varied just as minimally between 42% and 44%. Survey Methods
For the Gallup Poll Daily tracking survey, Gallup is interviewing no fewer than 1,000 U.S. adults nationwide each day during 2008.
The general-election results are based on combined data from July 7-9, 2008. For results based on this sample of 2,647 registered voters, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±2 percentage points.
Interviews are conducted with respondents on land-line telephones (for respondents with a land-line telephone) and cellular phones (for respondents who are cell-phone only).
In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.
