PRINCETON, NJ -- The latest Gallup Poll Daily tracking update on the presidential election trial heat finds Barack Obama maintaining his advantage over John McCain, 47% to 44%.
The period of stability in voter preferences continues, with Obama leading McCain by three or four percentage points in each of the last five Gallup Poll Daily tracking reports. Additionally, for the 17th consecutive report, Obama's support has ranged between 46% and 48% and McCain's between 42% and 44%.
It has now been more than a month since McCain has held any numerical advantage over Obama (a 1-point advantage in May 31-June 4 polling), and over two months since the GOP nominee had a statistically significant lead (a 4-point advantage in April 30-May 4 polling). Survey Methods
For the Gallup Poll Daily tracking survey, Gallup is interviewing no fewer than 1,000 U.S. adults nationwide each day during 2008.
The general-election results are based on combined data from July 13-15, 2008. For results based on this sample of 2,638 registered voters, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±2 percentage points.
Interviews are conducted with respondents on land-line telephones (for respondents with a land-line telephone) and cellular phones (for respondents who are cell-phone only).
In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.
