Gallup Daily: Obama Maintains Slight Edge Over McCain

Advantage is two points in latest update

PRINCETON, NJ -- The latest Gallup Poll Daily tracking updates shows the presidential race remains close, with Barack Obama continuing to hold a slight advantage over John McCain, 45% to 43%.

These results are based on interviews conducted July 16-18. In Friday's report, Barack Obama's support fell out of the narrow 46%-48% range it had been in for the prior 18 reports, and remains outside that range today. However, Obama had a stronger night in Friday interviewing and could inch back into that range with another strong performance tonight. (To view the complete trend since March 7, 2008, click here.)

Obama has begun a major overseas trip to Europe and the Middle East, and, in his capacity as a U.S. Senator, he will meet with U.S. military leaders and troops on the ground in Kuwait, Afghanistan, and Iraq. With the three major television network news anchors following Obama, McCain will face a bit of a challenge gaining news media attention at the same time. -- Jeff Jones.

Survey Methods

For the Gallup Poll Daily tracking survey, Gallup is interviewing no fewer than 1,000 U.S. adults nationwide each day during 2008.

The general-election results are based on combined data from July 16-18, 2008. For results based on this sample of 2,657 registered voters, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±2 percentage points.

Interviews are conducted with respondents on land-line telephones (for respondents with a land-line telephone) and cellular phones (for respondents who are cell-phone only).

In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.
