Employment Challenges Facing Young People Across the Arab World

New Data from Silatech's Voices of Young Arabs Report

sfq4gbmekui0ar6aa5yqiqOn November 17, 2010, Gallup and Silatech hosted an event to release the latest Silatech Index report titled Voices of Young Arabs. While much is written about the demographic "youth bulge" in the Arab world and its impact on unemployment rates across the region, few have asked young people themselves about the challenges they face in successfully entering the job market. The latest Silatech Index report highlights key trends in attitudes and perceptions among young people across the Arab world, including their desires to start a business, their access to and levels of satisfaction with resources that can help them enter the job market, and the connection between aspirations to migrate and SME-drain.

A panel of distinguished regional experts joined Gallup Senior Analyst Mohamed Younis to offer their insights on the latest findings and larger trends throughout the region. The panel included Ehaab Abdou, Adviser Middle East Youth Initiative a joint initiative of the Wolfensohn Center for Development at Brookings and the Dubai School of Government, Donna Kelly, Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship at Babson College, and Ahmed Younis, Gallup Senior Analyst and Silatech Director of Strategic partnerships.

The panelists discussed key findings including:

  • The majority of young people across the region say they would prefer government employment to the private sector.
  • Socioeconomics are a more powerful indicator than gender when predicting opportunities available to young people across the region.
  • The effect a job has on the environment is a "very important" factor in career decisions.
  • Saudi Arabia and the United States tie as the top desired destinations for young Arabs who wish to migrate permanently.

Journalists, government officials, business leaders, academics, policy-makers, others interested in gaining new and important insights into the employment challenges facing young people in the Arab world attended this event.

Employment Challenges Facing Young People Across the Arab World took place from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 17, 2010, at The Gallup Building, 901 F Street NW, Washington D.C. For more information, contact Krista Volzke at 402-938-6001.
