Trust in Government, the Parties, and the Press
This segment extensively covers public attitudes about the three branches of government. In addition to evaluating public trust and satisfaction with the president, Congress, and judicial system, it assesses U.S. political parties, the news media, and Americans themselves.

Moral Views and Values
In addition to gleaning overall perceptions of the state of moral values in this country, this installment covers numerous long-term Gallup trends dealing with abortion, the death penalty, gay rights, and religion. It also assesses the perceived moral acceptability of roughly 15 issues -- including euthanasia, divorce, cloning, premarital sex, among others. A special segment included this year focuses on animal rights.

Beyond Consumer Confidence: People and Their Finances
Fundamental perceptions about the U.S. economy and the government's leadership of it are updated annually in this GPSS segment, along with various personal financial measures. A core question tracks Americans' worry levels about seven different money issues, including making credit card payments, saving for retirement, and paying normal monthly bills. Working Americans' expectations about 10 potential retirement income sources are measured, as are current retirees' actual income sources.

The Environment
Americans assess the nation's environmental quality, rate the government's handling of the environment, and forecast future environmental conditions. This unit measures specific environmental concerns -- ranging from clean water to global warming -- and the public's level of personal involvement with environmental activities. Perceptions about the nation's energy supply and preferred approaches to solving U.S. energy needs are also featured.

This GPSS segment mines public opinion across a spectrum of crucial issues related to U.S. national security and international relations. Core measures in this GPSS include Americans' satisfaction with the U.S. position in the world, ratings for the U.S. government's handling of foreign policy, perceptions of the how the United States is viewed abroad, support for U.S. defense spending, favorable ratings of foreign countries, and perceived importance of various foreign policy goals.

A combination of long-term trends and new measures in general and specific areas reveal Americans' evaluations of the state of their nation.
