Albert L. Winseman, D. Min.

Author of Living Your Strengths and Growing an Engaged Church

Al Winseman is Global Practice Leader for Faith Communities for Gallup. Since joining Gallup in 2000 to develop this new practice area, Winseman has led research into the characteristics of effective congregations. Relying on more than 65 years of Gallup research in the areas of religion and organizational dynamics and conducting first-of-its-kind research with the general public and congregations, Winseman's team has discovered powerful linkages between congregational engagement, individual spiritual commitment, and outcomes of giving, serving, inviting, and life satisfaction.

Winseman consults with congregations, denominations, and other religious organizations across the country, helping them put the power of engagement to work to improve their effectiveness. He is also coauthor of Living Your Strengths, which helps members of congregations discover and use their God-given talents and strengths. His new book, Growing an Engaged Church, was published by Gallup Press in spring 2007.

Prior to joining Gallup, Winseman served as a pastor in the United Methodist Church for 15 years. A dynamic communicator and visionary leader, he planted a new congregation in the suburbs of Omaha, Nebraska, starting with little more than a vacant lot and a phone book. Within five years of its chartering, attendance topped 700 and membership approached 1,000 - and 75 percent of new members were previously unchurched. Winseman also served as Senior Pastor of a congregation in Lincoln, Nebraska, with worship attendance of more than 2,100.

Winseman received a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1980 and a Master of Divinity degree from the Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado, in 1985. In 1995, he received his Doctor of Ministry degree from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, with an emphasis on new church development.

Winseman lives in Lincoln, Nebraska, with his wife, Jane. They have two college-age daughters, Julie and Kaleigh.
