Preference for beer drops most among 18- to 34-year-olds
July 27, 2011
For only the second time in two decades, beer is not the dominant choice when U.S. drinkers are asked whether they most often drink liquor, wine, or beer. Gallup now finds nearly as many U.S. drinkers naming wine (35%) as beer (36%), while liquor still registers a distant third at 23%.
Sixty-seven percent of U.S. adults drink alcohol, a slight increase over last year and the highest reading recorded since 1985 by one percentage point. Beer remains the favorite beverage among drinkers, followed by wine and then liquor.
Among the nearly two-thirds of Americans who say they drink alcoholic beverages, 40% say they most often drink beer, 34% say wine, and 21% choose liquor.
Sixty-four percent drink, unchanged; beer is still the preferred beverage

Despite some talk that the recession could be changing Americans’ drinking patterns, Gallup finds no real shift in the prevalence of drinking alcohol among U.S. adults (now 64%) or in how much Americans say they drink. Beer beats out wine, 40% to 34%, as drinkers’ preferred beverage.
Shift back to beer most evident among 30- to 49-year-olds

Gallup finds 42% of U.S. drinkers naming beer as the alcoholic beverage they consume most often, compared with 31% who drink wine and 23% who drink liquor the most. After beer and wine essentially tied in 2005, beer has regained its standing as the No. 1 drink in the United States.
Women much less likely than men to say they drink more than they should at times

About one in five U.S. drinkers say they sometimes drink more alcoholic beverages than they should, according to a recent Gallup Poll. Men under age 30 are significantly more likely than older men or women of any age to say they sometimes drink too much. Self-reported over drinking is related to how frequently one drinks, as well as to their preferred type of drink.
Do you have occasion to use alcoholic beverages such as liquor, wine or beer, or are you a total abstainer? When did you last take a drink of any kind of alcoholic beverage? Approximately how many drinks of any kind of alcoholic beverages did you drink in the past SEVEN days?
Gallup's annual update on Americans' drinking habits shows beer again edging out wine as the adult beverage of choice. The percentage of Americans who drink any type of alcohol remains stable, though the poll shows that more Americans drink on a regular basis than a decade ago. Americans are dubious about the health benefits from regular drinking, as little more than one in five thinks drinking in moderation daily is good for one's health.
