In testifying before Congress on Sept. 10, 2007, Gen. David Petraeus faced enormous obstacles in overcoming public resistance to the war in Iraq, but it appears he surmounted some of these. The public's view of Petraeus has grown more favorable spanning his testimony, and the public generally favors his recommendations for a go-slow approach on withdrawal. At the same time, Americans' underlying skepticism about the war is unchanged.
