Kazakhstanis Divided About Honesty of Nation's Elections

Nearly all view democracy as very important or essential

Criticism of Kazakhstan's recent parliamentary elections echoes concerns expressed by nearly half of Kazakhstanis in a 2006 Gallup World Poll. Forty-three percent say they do not have confidence in the honesty of the country's elections, while 41% say they do. In addition, two-thirds of Kazakhstanis think corruption is widespread within the country's government, and 58% say the level of corruption in Kazakhstan is higher than it was during the Soviet era.More ...
