Malaysia's non-Muslims tend to hold less favorable perceptions of the government than Muslim residents do. About three in four non-Muslims perceive corruption to be widespread in the government, compared with about half of Muslims. Since 1971, Malaysia's economic policy has included programs specifically intended to improve the economic standing of ethnic Malays, who make up most of the country Muslim population. Today, despite the fact that they still have a lower average income than non-Muslims, 70% of Malaysia' Muslims say the country's current economic conditions are good.
