High rates of unemployment and underemployment are among the biggest problems facing southern Europe's troubled economies. Among southern Europeans with college degrees, however, employment figures are as strong as they are in more economically stable countries farther north.
Improving teacher quality requires major changes in the human capital strategy for most school districts and involves improving the recruitment, selection, development, evaluation, compensation, and retention of teachers. Teacher evaluation is a key element in this process.

Americans favor recruiting high-achieving high school students to become teachers, and would encourage the brightest person they know to become a teacher if he or she expressed an interest in doing so. Most consider teaching to be the result of natural talent rather than training.
Americans continue to grade nation's schools much more negatively than local schools

An all-time high of 37% of parents give their child's school an A grade, up sharply from 19% in 2007. The percentage of Americans giving the schools in their community an A is also the highest on record, at 14%. Americans say familiarity with and pride in local schools contributes to the difference in perceptions.
College educated least likely to be unemployed or underemployed

Nearly 7 in 10 U.S. adults (69%) strongly agree or agree that having a college degree is essential for getting a good job in this country. Americans with a college degree are much less likely to be unemployed or underemployment than those without a degree.

A new low of 26% of Americans approve of President Barack Obama's handling of the economy, down 11 percentage points since mid-May and by far the lowest of his presidency. More broadly, Obama is at a low ebb on five of seven major issues tested in the new poll.
