Demands of Leadership

Demands of Leadership helps senior executives who possess cross-functional or general leadership responsibilities to enhance their strategy and decision-making processes.

After decades of research and thousands of interviews with great leaders, Gallup research discovered seven factors crucial to leadership success. Built on these Seven Demands of Leadership, this strengths-based leadership program offers executives the opportunity to adopt new assumptions and a fresh approach to their personal leadership styles. Executives learn innovative new ideas and re-energize their vision for the future.

Demands of Leadership helps executives:

  • develop a comprehensive understanding of their talents and strengths and how to apply them to increase their leadership impact
  • examine how their leadership and management styles influence workgroup culture and employee engagement, which ultimately affects business outcomes
  • assess their leadership effectiveness across the Seven Demands of Leadership -- the seven challenges that leaders must meet to maximize their leadership impact:
  • Visioning
  • Mentoring
  • Knowing Self
  • Making sense of experience
  • Maximizing values
  • Building a constituency
  • Challenging experience
  • formulate a clear leadership strategy and present it to the class as a vision statement
  • choose two of the seven demands and a measurement for each to track their leadership impact over time
  • develop a strategy with their Gallup Executive Consultant to aid in achieving measurable performance improvement

Individualized Leadership Development

Prior to attending Demands of Leadership, executives complete Gallup's Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment and gain access to a two-hour developmental e-learning course.

  • The Clifton StrengthsFinder provides leaders with insights into their greatest areas of talent.
  • The e-learning course introduces leaders to the basics of strengths theory and strengths-based development concepts.

The leader's team members are asked to complete a Gallup Q 12employee engagement survey.

  • The Q 12 employee engagement report reveals how the leader's management style influences team member perceptions and employee engagement.

During the program, executives learn about the Seven Demands of Leadership, then they explore how the Seven Demands of Leadership concepts can be used to shape an effective leadership strategy.

  • Each executive's Clifton StrengthsFinder and employee engagement data are used to produce a personal and confidential Seven Demands of Leadership report. The report contains information and insights that serves as a guide and springboard for in-depth personal discussions between participants and Gallup Executive Consultants.
  • Using the Demands of Leadership report, participants and Gallup Executive Consultants formulate a Seven Demands of Leadership strategy that fits the executive's unique talents and strengths.

Gallup Executive Consultants help executives maximize the momentum and energy generated during the course by consulting with them again once each quarter for the following year.

  • Consultants and executives establish a follow-up plan, and executives track their progress as they develop, practice, and refine their Seven Demands leadership strategy.
