Austin Suellentrop, CliftonStrengths Portfolio Manager, was our guest on the Called to Coach May 2020 Community Update. Austin and Jim talked about a new Strengths Based Parenting workshop, the 2020 Gallup at Work Virtual Summit, how they are leaning on their dominant CliftonStrengths during these challenging times of isolation and quarantine, and the new colors for the 4 Domains that you'll be seeing in the late summer and early fall.

Below is a full transcript of the conversation, including time stamps. Full audio and video are posted above.

What should I look for in a job/career?

Jim Collison 0:01

I am Jim Collison, and live from our virtual studios around the world, this is Gallup's Called to Coach, recorded on May 1, 2020.

Jim Collison 0:20

Austin's the strength, the CliftonStrengths Portfolio Manager here at Gallup and Austin, welcome back to another Community Update!

Austin Suellentrop 1:27

Always a pleasure to be here, Jim. Thanks.

Jim Collison 1:29

Oh, it's great to have you and great to work with you, by the way, Austin. We, we really, you know, going into this, this pretty difficult time, just a lot of stress, a lot of things going on. It really, I think really shows the cohesiveness of a team when you put it under large amounts of stress. And some of the best teamwork I've seen happen in the last, you know, 60 days have been with my own internal teams. And I just, you know, I wouldn't want to, I wouldn't want to go through this with anybody else. And so, just from a community standpoint, I say that so, coaches you're well taken care of behind the scenes here with folks at Gallup. We continue to do everything we can. Austin is a big part of that. He's got some updates for you today around what's going on in the community. So what do you have for us today, Austin?

Austin Suellentrop 2:16

Yeah. Thanks, Jim. It -- I completely echo that sentiment, right. It's been, it's been a crazy couple months. I love the way you teed up on the preshow like the last -- we got through the 60 days of March, right. Like that's sort of how it feels, right. So with with May 1 being here, and a look towards the spring -- springtime and the sunshine and the summer ahead, I wanted to take a few minutes to share with the community some, some big things we've been working on that are now ready to go live -- that are now ready sort of out there for the world. And I want to start with a topic that is incredibly important to me, something I'm personally really passionate about. And it starts with this idea of strengths-based parenting. And I think, over the last 8 weeks being at home with with my 3 daughters, who are 9, 6 and 3, I've had a crash course in my strengths at play, and how they help in the day-to-day lives of my family, and how they get in my way. And, and being appreciative of the uniqueness of how my children process that and, and the uniqueness of how my wife and I partner in raising our kids.

Austin Suellentrop 3:22

And, you know, I think I've been on the record publicly before saying I think the single best thing Gallup has ever published is the book that Jennifer Robison and Dr. Mary Reckmeyer wrote, Strengths Based Parenting, I think it's the best book we've ever written. And what we've been able to do here in the last several weeks, we've been able to take that book and adapt a 90-minute workshop, a virtual workshop centered around strengths-based parenting that really, I think, digs into 3 chapters of it, if you will, sort of 3 sections in this workshop. An understanding and a grounding of what strengths-based parenting is, just how counter it is to what society tells us we should be doing as parents, and then a section around how you use your strengths as a parent personally, and a section around understanding and appreciating the strengths of your children.

Austin Suellentrop 4:12

So really excited. I've been heavily involved the last month or so in building this workshop, piloting it, testing it. I just got done this week leading 3 versions of it internally for our teams here at Gallup. And we're really excited that next week, we go live with our first public version of that virtual course. So there are, there are sessions available now for people to register. And we've got a couple offerings coming up in the month of June as well. So we're really excited to get this up and running. It's one of those things where for a long time, we've been offering work sort of tools around this for our clients, but now we're able to get it out to the world. So it's really exciting. And it really is designed, I think, to take the book, which I think is just sort of the guidepost for strengths-based parenting -- there's tremendous content there -- and get some tactical tips and tricks around things and get some people some experience.

Austin Suellentrop 5:02

I was doing a workshop yesterday for a group of our our internal teams, and we had spouses sitting side by side together going through this workshop and the conversations that we were able to have following up from it really get me excited about how we continue the strengths movement at home. Right? When you think about what we've been saying and studying in the workplace for so long, around how, you know, the the line between work and life is kind of blurred. The last 8 weeks, that line has been erased, right? So many of us are now working where we live full time, and we're living where we work full time. So how do you make sense of the concepts like strengths and engagement, day in, day out, when there is no difference between work and life? It is the same thing. We are balancing this all the time.

Austin Suellentrop 5:50

And so it's really exciting to be able to bring that to fruition. So that's probably one of the first and biggest things I wanted to get out there to this community is how -- just how excited we are for this, and just how I -- how timely I think it is, for many of us. And I know the coaching community has been probably on the forefront of thinking about this and how you help your clients apply these concepts at home. This is another great sort of tool to have in your bag in terms of being able to help support your clients through the application of it. So really excited about that.

Jim Collison 6:22

Austin, for folks looking for that, so they would go to our courses.gallup.com site, and then there's a drop-down that says "CliftonStrengths." And you would go to "Strengths Development." I have also put the link in the chat room as well. So all the information is out there. We encourage you to share that with folks that -- we have spun that up very, very quickly. And it's a great opportunity. You know, one of the things in the book is around strengths spotting, and as parents who now are at home, who have become both a worker and a teacher and daycare and, right, some of those, there is an opportunity there to, you know, you're now spending more time with your children. And and certainly during these, these times, some great opportunities to kind of watch what they're doing and how they're doing. If they're 10 to 14, of course, we have that assessment for them. The, the --

Austin Suellentrop 7:14

Explorer, StrengthsExplorer.

Jim Collison 7:15

StrengthsExplorer, just total, I did a whole series on it. StrengthsExplorer went out, it just went out of my head there for a second. And then, of course, the assessments that we have for the adults are available as well. Maybe it just may be a great time to do that, both for yourself and for those you're coaching.

Austin Suellentrop 7:30

Yeah, absolutely. And I think one of the, one of the things I've, I've loved as I was, as I've been able to lead these sort of pilots internally and get the content developed, it's obviously sort of provoked me to reflect and think and talk a lot of how my parenting and how my strengths show up. And I think one of the things I've come to really appreciate, right, is the ability to have some time and some and I think of it almost like a playground to experiment with my strengths and experiment with my kids around this and try different things that work.

Austin Suellentrop 8:00

And one of the best tips I received from a participant in one of our pilots internally was challenging me to think with my 9-year-old daughter who's high Relating, high Organizing and high Presence -- those are her three Explorer themes. And to be thinking about, How do I play that into how I'm helping teach her in -- when I'm homeschooling her the next couple weeks, right. I've been thinking a lot as a father about how I could use those sort of social activities in our family time. But I hadn't applied it to how I was approaching the homeschooling with her. Right, because I'm so naturally not organized. I'm so naturally in the moment, Adaptability, Activator, sort of right here and now. And so it was a really great sort of thing to think about when I was able to reflect on her themes about helping her build a schedule and her owning the schedule she wants to own and playing to her Organizer. So little things like that, that I think are really timely in the situation we're in right now. So --

Jim Collison 9:00

Austin, the cost includes, it's really kind of, it can be at a family level, two -- both parents, right? They can, they can join together with that. It does come with one StrengthsExplorer code; you can purchase additional ones for those in the family if you want. If the adults have not taken CliftonStrengths yet, they can purchase codes to be able to do that as well. The course includes the first Clifton -- the StrengthsExplorer code as a part of it. And then as many of the family can join in that conversation.

Austin Suellentrop 9:14
Yeah, absolutely. And we really encourage the book to be sort of your guide here, right? If you don't have a copy of the book Strengths Based Parenting and you're interested in this topic, that's where to start. The workshop is built as a companion to the book, not as a replacement for it.

Jim Collison 9:40

Yeah. And I think we kind of built this in a way to "a la carte" it so that folks could, if they, if they could get -- sometimes in some markets, some markets the book is harder to get than others, and like sending all that stuff out. So we've kind of left those options open to folks. They can, of course, purchase the course and then fill in the blanks for whatever they need there, based on what resources are available to them.

Austin Suellentrop 9:59

Yeah. For sure. So that's really exciting. It's out there now. You'll see, you'll see and hear more about it. I think it's -- what I'm really excited about is we've got two offerings that are sort of surrounding our summit this year, right. So we're a month out now of the Gallup at Work Summit, the huge virtual event that we're -- we've pivoted to. I, for one, I'm really thrilled about this, and the ability -- I've always loved the summit. It's been something I've looked forward to every year as a chance to rally with my people, and sort of soak up the energy of the community. But frankly, it's always tough for me having to get on a plane and leave my wife and children and figure, out in the middle of summer, how they're going to navigate with with one parent gone.

Austin Suellentrop 10:39

So I'm really excited this year to be able to be a part of this event and not have to leave my home. Like that's one of the perks of this thing to me. So we're really excited about the summit. If you haven't had the chance to check it out yet, right, June 2, 2020. The Gallup at Work Virtual Summit, it's -- we are like the -- there was a whole episode, I know Abbie was on with you sort of talking last week about this. If you haven't had a chance to hear that and check that out, great insight to what you can expect there. I'm thrilled and looking forward to it. It's going to be new, it's going to be different. It's going to be a unique experience.

Austin Suellentrop 11:10

But I think one of the coolest things is the fact that there will be people who can attend this virtual summit that have not ever been able to attend one of our in-person summits, right. We're able to reach parts of the world with this format that we haven't been able to before, which means you'll be able to interact with people in a different way, from different perspectives than ever before. And that's really what it's all about, in terms of, of our idea of a summit is bringing people together to share the passion, learn from each other around all the things that you're doing, all the great stuff that our community's out there doing. So really excited about that.

Jim Collison 11:41

Austin some of the feedback -- gallupatwork.com -- let me just say that. That's where that's where you go to sign up for that. Some of the feedback I've gotten from folks outside the United States is it's a difficult time that's going to be Central time zone, and we're doing it. So I thought I'd test that, and the other day, I had a call at 3 in the morning that I needed to be up for. And so I got up at 2:30 and I joined the call. And it was one day and I went back to bed, and here I am. I'm still here. For this for this situation, you know, you can do -- and we're looking at maybe trying to do some, some watch parties around this, but really the best experience is live with everybody there. And it's one day. If you can do it -- not everybody can -- but if you can do it, change your hours for -- just pretend like you're going on an international flight. You'd have to, you'd have to adapt to it anyways, right? You'd have a little bit of jet lag, you know.

Jim Collison 12:29

Maybe go to bed early or stay up late, whatever it takes, but we'd love to have you join us live for that event. I think it's just gonna be one of those super cool events. If you haven't joined, if you haven't seen that yet, again, go out -- last Friday, Abbie and I did an interview on the Called to Coach channel, still on the live page. So this channel you're watching us on right now, most likely on our live channel. It's there. Just go to the -- go back to the directory and find the one from last Friday for the Gallup at Work Summit. Love to have you there.

Austin Suellentrop 12:55

Yep. And to that point, Jim, I think one of the things I know this community appreciates about, about you, Jim, and about the team is just how much we've been putting out there. Just how much content's been created in the last 6, 8 weeks, right? I think it's been just about every workday, there's been a new episode of some sort. There's been a podcast, a webcast, conversations that are being out, sort of released. And so, I think, understanding all of that effort, all of that sort of excitement and energy behind this, it's really culminating at the summit, right. That's going to be sort of the chance for us to, to really get sort of everything together at one point. So it's really I think gonna be an incredibly timely event in that sense as well, as we continue to learn more from our pulsing and our surveying and sort of monitoring of the COVID situation globally, as well as sharing and hearing of best practices from organizations around the world. And sort of how the -- what the new world looks like coming out of this time with some, some, you know, some content that we've been really excited to share with you. So long way of saying I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully, you can join us -- understand the uniqueness of the time challenge, but it's at least more available than it would have been as an in-person event, right?

Jim Collison 14:06

And those, those registrations are ramping up, Austin, I've been watching the numbers on a daily basis. And we'd love to sell the thing out because you can't. So this is a great opportunity, right? We're just going to continue. We'd love to have ... thousand people come to this. We could never do that in person. But we can definitely ... So, so rally the folks around you; get them to come out. The pricing is right, and we'd love an opportunity to be able to hang out with you on June 2.

Austin Suellentrop 14:31

Yep. So I think that the, the last thing I want to share with the community before we jump into the Q&A here today is, god, it's been months ago, months ago, a lifetime ago that we introduced the idea and the news that we were going to be updating our 4 Domain colors, right that the 4 Domain colors sort of to try to bring an enhanced experience and more accessibility, from an ADA perspective, into our domain colors. We will be updating those. Want to give you a bit of an update on timing, right? This whole, this whole world in the last 8 weeks has been sort of grabbed and shaken upside down. But we've got some clarity for you around when you can expect to start seeing those, right.

Austin Suellentrop 15:12

So we'll begin to phase in those new colors throughout the month of August, right. So throughout the month of August, you'll start to see those colors appearing in different places. And by the, by the first week of September, by early September, you'll see those colors in Access. You'll see them in the reports you're downloading. You'll begin to see them in gallup.com, in our presence there. So by the, by early September, you'll see those new colors just about everywhere, right. But it's gonna be a phased thing through the month of August. So it's not going to be one day you wake up and turn something on and it's up there everywhere. That's just, that's not the approach we're taking. We're sort of phasing it in, but you can expect that to start happening in August.

Austin Suellentrop 15:53

So we're really excited to get this, to get this happening and to start sharing it broadly. So we've been working with our, our teams behind the scenes for the last several months, archiving and inventorying and auditing all the places that our domain colors show up in these, you know, thousands of PDF files and images on different websites. We've got it all ready; we're working through it. And you'll start to see those show up through the month of August. And by early September, those colors will be just about everywhere you would be accessing those colors. So we're really excited to -- I know many of you have been waiting on pins and needles from us to let you know when that's coming. There you go. That's the timeline. You'll continue to hear more from us in terms of that in the, in the coming months as we get closer to it. So just wanted to make sure I got that out there for everybody.

Jim Collison 16:37

Yeah, I've been working on buying all new T-shirts so that I have a T-shirt a week in those colors and some of those other -- not really. I'm joking, people. I'm joking. I'm not -- that's a, to be honest with you, it's the last thing on my radar at the moment is that, but we certainly -- those will be coming Quarter 3. Quarter 4, no race. You don't need to get out ahead of it or behind it. It's -- we're going to be spending a bunch of time updating it as well so, so do do it as you have time, if you need to update things as well. OK. So Holly asks the question right away: Gallup swag T-shirts in the new domain colors! Yes! I don't know, as we -- probably not at the summit for sure. No, but --

Austin Suellentrop 16:56

No. So again, but if you think about sort of the phasing of the approach, right, physical products are probably going to be the last end, sort of towards the tail end of that phased approach, right. Because it's easier to update all the digital content than, than it is to update sort of physical things and having inventory. So Ralph, to your question, I see that -- When will we be sharing? Very shortly, right. So, in --look out, stay tuned for newsletters and so forth, where we're communicating all the details around the specifics of those colors. We've shared an image of them before to give you an idea of what's coming. We will be sharing those specifics via the newsletters.

Jim Collison 17:58

Mark asks, on the summit site, access day before to make sure the technology is working properly. I think they've -- I think Abbie talked about that in the plan. I'd have to ask her on that. Do you know, Austin, if we're --

Austin Suellentrop 18:08

I don't know specifics. I do know there is a testing process, right, that there is, that there is a mechanism in place around that to make sure you can validate your technology is set up right.

Jim Collison 18:19

And Ralph makes a good point. We're still trying to get the word "StrengthsFinder" out of some things. So it's gonna, it's a little bit of, a little bit of work in progress.

Austin Suellentrop 18:27

Well, Ralph, "StrengthsFinder" is better than "StrengthFinders," which is where I still get emails with "StrengthFinders" all the time, right. So at least we're a step in the right direction.

Jim Collison 18:36

I hear that all the time. People say, "Yeah, StrengthsFinders," and you're like, "Oh, no, not really," but it's a good thing we turned it to "CliftonStrengths."

Austin Suellentrop 18:43

So Ralph, Ralph to your point, I do wear this [points to "CliftonStrengths" logo on shirt] just about every time I'm on the webcast. I wear this just for sublime, subliminal, sort of like marketing, you know, like, planting in the back of our heads.

Jim Collison 18:53

Well, and we're "Gallup CliftonStrengths." [logo on Jim's shirt says "Gallup"] That works out -- that always -- we do coordinate, just we do. Let's see. Oh, yeah, this is a good one. Can we remove the word "Strategic" from Strategic Thinking Domain, as people often confuse the talent? Yeah, that's probably not gonna happen. But --

Austin Suellentrop 19:11

I do -- to that, to that question: That's been discussed. Just so you know, like, that, like, that's feedback we've received. So that's not something we've just glossed over and said, Oh, that would be too difficult. There was thinking sort of put in place around the naming of the domains initially. And from a continuity perspective, we've chosen to maintain the naming of those domains. Will that be there forever? I don't know. I don't want to say forever. But at this point, there's no plan to change that. So I appreciate the question.

Jim Collison 19:38

I have 6 years of Theme Thursday with all that embedded in it. That would be -- colors not so much, but the wording -- yeah, that's a that's kind of a bigger, a bigger deal to me. Yeah. Appreciate the suggestions, guys, on some of these things. Right now, we're -- there's enough going on. We're not gonna mess around with the wording, least, at least at this point, so we appreciate that. A couple, couple minutes, maybe, for some final questions that you might have out there. Austin, while we're waiting for those questions, let me ask you this question. I've kind of been asking everybody. How are you personally leaning -- how are you using your strengths during this time, as we think about the last 60 days? As I mentioned early in the show. What do you think -- where are you at, as far as seeing what you're best at and then really kind of going into overdrive to use that more during this crisis?

Austin Suellentrop 20:32

Yeah. So that's a great question, Jim. So I've got high Positivity, right. It's a Top 5 thing for me. And one of the things about people with high Positivity, one of the, one of the sort of standard wordings we have around it is we like to enjoy the drama of life. Right? And we need a way to express -- I got high Communication as well -- so we need a way to express and talk about the drama of life. So I haven't shied away from the ups and downs of this, right. I haven't tried to act like everything's fantastic when I have rough days or when things are stressful. I've, so I've sort of leaned into my Positivity in that sense of like, Hey, the down days make me appreciate the good days more. But I haven't tried to shy away from it.

Austin Suellentrop 21:13

One thing I've been really intentional about, I'd say in the last week to 10 days, is how I'm using my Futuristic through this. I've, I've, my entire life, I've kind of had a tendency, when things get really tough in the moment, to sort of use my Futuristic as an escape mechanism. Like, I don't want to deal with the reality of today; I'm going to think about 6 months from now. And because it's pain-free 6 months from now. And so sometimes that can really help me. But sometimes it can also sort of lead me to be sort of naive to just how tough things really are right now. And so I've been using my Futuristic intentionally to think about, and talk with my kids in particular, about things like when you go back to school in the fall, or when this is all over with, what's the funniest thing you're going to tell your friends you did? What's the happiest moment of this time right now that you can share with your friends? What's the, what's the one story you want to make sure you tell on the first day of school? To try and get myself my family thinking about what are the fun things, the happy things, the, the memories we're making now that we can't wait to share with people? Rather than just, you know, escaping to the future and sort of ignoring the present.

Austin Suellentrop 22:27

So that, that's a way I'm trying to use my strengths on purpose right now to appreciate and enjoy the uniqueness of this, right. My -- I've told this community before, I'm highly active in my -- my two daughters play softball, and I'm the commissioner of our softball league. I coach their teams. And so we haven't had a season. And that's been really tough for both my kids, as well as for our family routine like that -- we live at the ballpark. And so I've been talking to them a lot about, Hey, when you get back with your teammates, like what's the first thing you want to ask them? What's the, what's the, what's the first thing you want to say to get them excited about that, but also sort of living in the here and now?

Jim Collison 23:05

Yeah, no, super good. Lisa brings in a question I think very applicable, is How is Gallup thinking about these themes and resilience, specifically? It's a traumatic time, even if we don't quite feel it yet, the resiliency or resilience is going to be very, very critical. I think the good news is we already have started thinking about this. And there's a bunch of stuff coming, as we think about Q3 and Q4, as we, as we pull out of this, and, and yeah, I think there's -- Do you -- anything, would you have anything specific to that?

Austin Suellentrop 23:34

You know, I think, I think back to my time learning about -- as a Strengths Coach under, under Curt Liesveld. And, and Curt had a phrase he would use that, you know, under times of great stress and duress is when we have a tendency to revert to the rawest form of our talents. And that we can sort of in like, the instinctive reaction gets ramped up, right. And so I think, I think what we have been doing, as we have been sort of studying and being very mindful about what we're seeing in the workplace right now, what we're seeing in the communities that we work with around this, I think the timing for us was kind of fortuitous. We were already in the process of updating, like our State of the American Workplace research and things along those lines. We, we've got all of our Gallup polling data, where we're able to really get to see and dig into some things throughout this stressful time, where we've been tracking things and now we can see what's different in this time. Right?

Austin Suellentrop 24:34

So will it take the form of any sort of new published research on on specific themes and resilience? Maybe, maybe not. What it will likely take the form of is more of an insight on behaviors in this time, right? What are we seeing people behave differently in terms of, of sort of reacting to this, this environment we're in? And I think we can connect those behaviors to specific themes, right? I've see -- one of the things I love about this community is I've seen some coaches and some other organizations taking the concepts and running with it. Right. And putting out content there. I think those are great, great tools to lean on. We're really hyper focused right now on, on some other areas around that. But I think you can, you can certainly expect to see from us some, some research and some thinking around how behaviors are shifting as a result of this time.

Jim Collison 25:25

Yeah. No, right on. I think that's, I think that's a great answer. And I think during this time of disruption, it gives us great opportunity to kind of question everything. You know, you're kind of Hmm ... I mean, I, early on, I went through my budget and I questioned everything. Like, do we need this? Do we need this? You know, how are we using that -- do I need to change the way we're doing things? And, and there's, there's nothing like a massive -- I mean, this may be the biggest disruption that we see in our lifetimes in the global workplace, which I didn't ever think was going to be possible. You know, we've had these microdisruptions around the world, but this is affecting everybody around the world. And so it just doesn't happen that often.

Austin Suellentrop 26:04

Yeah, to that point, to that point, you know, one of the things I love about working at Gallup is I've got a global team of experts, I got a global team of people who are remarkably passionate about this. And one of the coolest things -- it happened this morning on a meeting, you know. I get to I work in the Central Time Zone in the U.S. And so it's not uncommon for me at you know, 7, 8:00 at night, shoot off an email with an idea or a thought to somebody here my time. And then wake up the next morning, and one of my partners in Australia has taken it, spent a day working on it and shot it back to me. So that literally, I've been productive all night in my mind, because an idea that was thrown out there, somebody took it, ran with it, edited it, got the idea moved down the road a little bit.

And it got me thinking, Why haven't I been doing that my entire time? Why haven't I been leaning on this global community more my entire sort of working life. I think that's one of those things, because we are all in this together, that we're being able to realize: how we can collaborate more effectively, globally. And that's one of the really cool takeaways for me.

I think Lisa says it well, We'll need to be coaching people who are questioning everything, too. And, you know, you and I did a series last week, I think, kind of based on our career page around changing careers. What happens? We didn't build that page knowing this was coming, but certainly it's some interesting -- I mean it's spot-on for what a lot of people were questioning. And so, you know, we, we have a lot of people out of work, who, when we go back, I think some people think the pieces are just going to go back in the same place. In other words, it was a finished puzzle that just got, that just got, you know, taken apart. And now we need to figure out how to get the same pieces back in the same place. I don't think an economy comes back together that way. I think there's gonna be a ton of movement and shiftment -- shiftment. That's a new word: shiftment. Yeah, you know what I meant.

And, and some great opportunities for coaching people in this time to really have them maybe move into some careers where it's a little more strengths-based. Like, I don't know, what is something you were a little more interested in than -- fill in the blank of -- the job that you did before. So there's some great opportunities. Austin, thanks for coming out. Our time, we try to keep this to 30 minutes. And I think our time is nigh. And so we appreciate you guys around the world who are serving as coaches to kind of get in there and really change the lives of people. And so I want to say thanks. Any final thoughts from you, Austin?

No, I, again, what we're going through globally, it takes all of us playing our part and playing our role. And what I love so much about this community is not only a willingness, but an eagerness to play that role, and how we help people and how we help navigate through this as an, as a global community. So thank you sincerely for everything you do to help further our mission, to help navigate organizations and individuals through this really tough time. We will come out of this, I think, so much better than we went into it. We're learning so much about how to optimize and how to really help each other. So thank you for all the help you give to us. And I look forward to talking to you next time.
