Gallup Daily: April Bringing More Dour Economic Assessment

Based on polling conducted April 5-7, 2008

PRINCETON, NJ -- After showing signs of slight improvement in late March, Gallup Poll Daily tracking on consumer confidence shows attitudes returning to more negative levels in April -- 42% of Americans rate economic conditions as "poor" and 85% say the economy is getting worse. In late March, poor ratings dropped below 40% for several days, while the percentage saying the economy was getting worse fell to the low 80% range, but even those slightly better late March economic ratings are among the worst Gallup has measured in any poll. -- Jeff Jones

Survey Methods

Gallup is interviewing no fewer than 1,000 U.S. adults nationwide each day during 2008. The economic questions analyzed in this report are asked of a random half-sample of respondents. The results reported here are based on combined data from 1,535 interviews conducted April 5-7, 2008. For results based on this sample, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points. In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.
