Gallup Daily: Economy Ratings Just Shy of Worst in 2008

Based on polling conducted May 4-6, 2008

PRINCETON, NJ -- For the third straight day in Gallup Poll Daily tracking, negative consumer perceptions are slightly below their worst 2008 levels, as 41% of Americans call U.S. economic conditions "poor" and 84% believe the economy is getting worse.

The year's most negative readings on these measures, thus far, have been the 47% calling the economy poor, recorded April 21-23, and the 87% saying the economy is getting worse, last reached April 29-May 1. -- Lydia Saad

Survey Methods

For the Gallup Poll Daily tracking survey, Gallup is interviewing no fewer than 1,000 U.S. adults nationwide each day during 2008. The economic questions analyzed in this report are asked of a random half-sample of respondents. The results reported here are based on combined data from 1,493 interviews conducted May 4-6, 2008. For results based on this sample, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points. In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.
