Gallup Daily: Economic Ratings Remain Negative

Based on polling conducted May 12-14, 2008

PRINCETON, NJ -- Americans' outlook for the direction of the economy is now slightly less negative than it was late last week, evidenced by a decline in the percentage saying the economy is getting worse. The high for the year on this measure of 88% was reached in Gallup's May 12 economic report. According to Gallup Poll Daily tracking from May 12-14, it is now 83%.

At the same time, there has been a slight uptick in positive ratings of current U.S. conditions, as 19% now call them excellent or good, the highest this reading has been in nearly a month. -- Lydia Saad

Survey Methods

For the Gallup Poll Daily tracking survey, Gallup is interviewing no fewer than 1,000 U.S. adults nationwide each day during 2008. The economic questions analyzed in this report are asked of a random half-sample of respondents. The results reported here are based on combined data from 1,479 interviews conducted May 12-14, 2008. For results based on this sample, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points. In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.
