How Does the Gallup-Lumina Foundation Poll Work?

Assesses U.S. Public Opinion on Key Issues Facing Higher Education

What was the Gallup-Lumina Foundation Poll?

Gallup and Lumina Foundation created the Gallup-Lumina Foundation Poll to gauge the American public's opinion on the most pressing issues facing higher education, including cost, access, quality, workforce readiness, and online degrees. This poll offered valuable insights for education leaders on how to redesign the higher education system to meet the American public's needs in a changing economy and world.

How were interviews conducted for the Gallup-Lumina Foundation Poll?

Gallup interviewed U.S. adults aged 18 and older using a dual-frame design, which included both landline and cellphone numbers. Gallup sampled landline and cellphone numbers using random-digit-dial methods. Gallup purchased samples for this study from Survey Sampling International (SSI). Gallup chose landline respondents at random within each household based on which member had the most recent birthday. Each sample of national adults included a minimum quota of 50% cellphone respondents and 50% landline respondents, with additional minimum quotas by time zone within region. Gallup conducted interviews in Spanish for respondents who are primarily Spanish-speaking.

Were Gallup-Lumina Foundation Poll samples weighted?

Yes, Gallup weighted samples to correct for unequal selection probability, nonresponse, and double coverage of landline and cellphone users in the two sampling frames. Gallup also weighted its final samples to match the U.S. population according to gender, age, race, Hispanic ethnicity, education, region, population density, and phone status (cellphone only, landline only, both, and cellphone mostly). Demographic weighting targets were based on the most recent Current Population Survey figures for the aged 18 and older U.S. population. Phone status targets were based on the most recent National Health Interview Survey. Population density targets were based on the most recent U.S. Census.

How many people were interviewed in a typical Gallup-Lumina Foundation Poll?

The Gallup-Lumina Foundation Poll included interviews with approximately 1,000 U.S. adults ages 18 and older. Beginning in fall 2014, Gallup interviewed approximately 1,500 U.S. adults each year.
