The 2026 Greater Washington Community Foundation-Gallup Community Insights Report examines how residents across the DMV region are experiencing life today by tracking community wellbeing, opportunity and quality of life. The findings reveal a region that is resilient but whose residents are living through a uniquely turbulent chapter. Residents continue to value the region's opportunities and strong communities, yet many report ongoing concerns about housing, affording necessities and job availability. The study also highlights the effects of recent federal workforce reductions, which have created new pressures for many households and compounded existing economic challenges.

The findings are designed to help funders, nonprofits, community organizations and regional leaders make more informed decisions that support a thriving future for all residents.

55% More than half (55%) of DMV households have been negatively affected by federal job cuts, a figure that rises to 66% for residents in D.C.
51% Only half (51%) of DMV residents rate the local job availability positively, a 14-point drop from 2023.
11% DMV residents rate the availability of affordable housing (11%) lowest in the list of regional aspects, reflecting no improvement since 2023.
