Women’s Health: Barriers to Care, Barriers to Opportunity

Gallup and Pivotal, a group of organizations founded by Melinda French Gates to accelerate social progress for women and young people in the U.S. and around the world, partnered on a new study examining the state of women’s health in the U.S. The study looks at how women’s experiences with health and healthcare extend into their work, family lives and communities.

Based on a survey of 5,232 U.S. adults, including 3,845 women, the research explores women’s health across critical life stages, barriers to receiving needed care and information and the broader effects of health on women’s lives.

The findings reveal gaps between women’s healthcare needs and their experiences receiving care. More than half of women report at least one negative healthcare experience in the past five years, while cost, access and information gaps create additional obstacles. These challenges span contraception, pregnancy and postpartum care, mental health and menopause, and are associated with women’s ability to participate fully at work, at home and in their communities.
