On a recent Called to Coach: Singapore/Australia Edition, we spoke with Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach Andrew Jones.

Andrew's professional mission is to help people understand their potential and develop their strengths. He said, "It's what gets me out of bed in the morning." As a leader and HR professional, Andrew enjoys pushing people to be their best selves.

Andrew explained that he doesn't need to "sell" the strengths-based approach to his clients, except for convincing them that self-improvement is a worthwhile business endeavor. Indeed, Andrew feels, "It's easier to focus on improving oneself with the positive language of strengths." Andrew explained that focusing on improving yourself can be an intimidating endeavor and that most improvement programs focus on negatives or weaknesses. With strengths, that conversation is turned positive focuses on magnifying clients' talents.

Andrew also advocates CliftonStrengths and Gallup strengths-based culture because it provides a unique and individualized portrait of every person. It is not, like some assessments, a simplistic personality test that puts a person into a box. With those types of tests, Andrew explained that there is the potential for creating a cohort within a team -- and that such cohorts prevent team members from seeing each other as individuals. Instead, the team spends time dissecting the characteristics of the "box" where the test told them they fit. It is more beneficial for teams and individuals to see each person as a unique collection of strengths so they can appreciate every team member on an individual basis.

Andrew Jones' Top 5 CliftonStrengths are Self-Assurance, Context, Adaptability, Maximizer and Strategic.
