On a recent Called to Coach, we spoke with Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach Carol Anne McGuire.

Carol Anne discovered strengths while working as an educator and as an employee of the actor, Will Smith. She loved strengths -- but her career and family absorbed most of her time. She simply did not have the time to focus on strengths. After her career had taken some fast and interesting turns, Carol Anne found herself returning to the idea of strengths, "Strengths kept bubbling up for me -- I knew I wanted to be a strengths coach."

Carol Anne began sketching strengths themes early in her career. As a coach, it helped her more deeply understand each theme -- especially the themes that were at the bottom of her 34. She could coach clients in a more focused and meaningful way after sketching and understanding all of the themes.

One of Carol Anne's best strengths coaching memories happened at a multimillion-dollar construction company client. She was coaching the manager and the foreman of a construction crew. While the crew itself was very talented, communication was ineffective, and productivity was low. Carol Anne noticed that the manager had Achiever in his Top 5 strengths while the foreman had Responsibility in his Top 5. The manager gave the foreman lists of tasks to accomplish, which was the manager's preferred method of communication. In turn, the foreman told the manager when the crew finished each task. Carol Anne asked each person -- the manager and the foreman -- to communicate with the other in the manner they were most comfortable: the foreman provided the manager a list of completed tasks and the manager told the foreman what he expected to be done. This seemingly simple change exponentially boosted communication and productivity across the entire crew.

Carol Anne McGuire's Top 5 CliftonStrengths are Achiever, Learner, Focus, Positivity and WOO.
