On a recent Called to Coach -- Southeast Asia Edition, we spoke with Lam Lye Chan. Lye Chan is one of the first Gallup-Certified Strengths Coaches in Singapore.

With more than 20 years of experience in training and developing people in the hospitality industry, Lye Chan has served as a consultant in a multitude of business areas. Her extensive list of clients includes hotels (local and overseas), clubs, serviced apartments, hospitals, and organizations in the banking and property management industries.

While in the training and consulting business, Lye Chan noticed there was a shortage of manpower in the healthcare, retail, and hospitality industries in Singapore. Despite stressful work environments, low productivity, and high turnover rates, Lye Chan was determined to turn these industries around. She knew that, in order to boost productivity, she had to help employees enjoy their work by coaching them to realize their potential.

Get to Know the Client

When beginning a coaching session, Lye Chan recommends getting to know the person first. Ask them what they do best and what they enjoy doing the most. If they aren't happy, find out what is robbing them of their happiness. It's important to personally get to know each client to adapt your coaching to his or her specific needs.

Be a Guide

Lye Chan says that coaches who are condescending and act superior toward their clients will have problems getting positive results. Coaches need to act like coaches, guiding their clients through their strengths journey.

Lam Lye Chan's Top 5 CliftonStrengths are Responsibility, Maximizer, Learner, Arranger and Futuristic.
