Jim Collison 0:00

I am Jim Collison, and live from the Gallup Studios here in Omaha, Nebraska, this is Gallup's Called to Coach, recorded on March 6, 2020.

Jim Collison 0:20

And that sounds super important. Austin, welcome to Called to Coach!

Austin Suellentrop 1:19

Thanks for having me, Jim. Always appreciate it.

Jim Collison 1:21

Good, good to have you. We've got some updates today. Anything you want to start off with?

Austin Suellentrop 1:26

So we were talking -- you were mentioning before we went live here -- so I was in, I was in Omaha for the last couple days this week. You know, I work from my home in Birmingham, Alabama, primarily, but I get to make it to Omaha -- I don't know -- about once a month for a couple days. Get to see some people, and this this week in particular, I was excited because I was leading a Strengths Discovery Session for our new hires. As part of our onboarding process at Gallup, we put all of our new, new team members through Strengths Discovery Workshops, but we do two different workshops, space it out over a couple months. And I was going to do a workshop with some of our, our new hires.

Austin Suellentrop 2:06

And it was exciting for me to get back sort of, in the course-leading facilitation mode a little bit, which I've done for many years. But we were, we were chatting when I was in town, we got to spend -- have dinner one night and catch up a little bit. And you were talking about a lot of the really cool things you're doing with strengths and with our community, outside of sort of our normal routine, if you will, and outside of sort of what what maybe -- thanks, Ralph -- outside of the, the routine with this community, some of the international things you got going on. And so I want to make sure you had the chance to share some of the things you're seeing and the feedback you're getting. So I'd love to sort of kick us off this morning with with you doing that.

Jim Collison 2:43

Yeah, one of the best parts of my job is that I get to kind of watch the strengths movement grow around the world. And, you know, I think when we kicked things off 6, 7, 8 years ago now, you know, we had big aspirations. And the word "billion" got, got thrown around a lot. And everybody's -- we're driving towards this kind of global implementation. And, you know, the, the, the interesting thing is, is, you know, we've gotten into this; it's easy to kind of get wrapped into the day to day and forget about just the great things that are happening kind of around the world. And, and I have the privilege because I don't have a choice, I have to watch and listen to every single Called to Coach that we do, right? It's just, it's part of the job, right? And so I get this opportunity to hear them. I don't get to say I'm too busy; I get the opportunity to hear what's happening. And I get an opportunity to create some new things are happening.

Jim Collison 3:37

So I want to highlight a few things that we're creating, just to make you aware. To the English-speaking community, this may not be such a big deal, but, but, as we think about our, our opportunity, globalization, you're gonna have some updates on that as well. Pretty cool. One is we've been working on a Japanese Theme Thursday, and so Hirocco, one of our contractors in Japan, has been meeting with me and we've been having guests. And we just recorded one. We don't do these live; we record them and then make them available. I think we have 6 or 7 of them that are out there now, just Theme Thursday, Japanese. Super easy to find on any of the podcast channels, if you want to go do that. But they are doing an amazing job.

Jim Collison 4:16

Strengths is getting a -- is kind of -- is surging again in Japan. And the, the guest that we had Thursday, or -- no, yeah. When was it? Wednesday? Thursday? I think it was Wednesday night -- said, Yeah, it is difficult to work -- it's difficult to be a Japanese employee right now. And the pressure's intense and there's a lot of things going on culturally. And they're really searching in Japan for kind of a new, like, there's gotta be, there's got to be a better way to do this. And strengths is kind of the answer to that -- is, is one of the answers to that question. So very, very, very cool. In language.

Jim Collison 4:55

So one of the privileges for me is I don't have to speak any of these languages, and we have systems in place that can kind of make these, produce them and we can get them out in language. Very, very cool. We also recorded -- Ralph is in the chat room as well. Yesterday, Ralph came on and recorded first-ever in-language German Called to Coach. And Ralph tells his story, and you'll just have to go listen to it. And you have to learn German, if you don't know that, and then go listen to it. A very touching story, and, and very impactful in the way he and his wife do strengths in the community they're a part of. And so very cool that we can do that; we actually have 3 or 4 that are in the -- that are kind of queued up at this point. So throughout the summer, we'll be doing more of those, so cool that we're getting those in language.

Jim Collison 5:46

We're actually beginning some early, some early versions of some stuff. We've done some Called to Coach and Theme Thursday in Spanish. You know, we have a full version of Theme Thursday, full season available today in Spanish that way. And we have some additional Spanish resources coming online with that as well. So we, Austin, we're really, really excited about the in-language pieces you'll update here in just a second. Let me also say, one of the questions I get all the time around our webcasts and around our communities is, What about the, what about the mega-organizations, what about the big companies that are doing this -- the enterprise companies that work with us, the big ones? And, and we, we certainly have written about a lot of those. We've had them on our, on Called to Coach before. So Stryker and Accenture have come on. Regions has come on, we had you on. So we do that, but Southwest is coming up next week. So on the 13th of -- next, next Friday, the 13th. I didn't think about that. That's probably ...

Austin Suellentrop 6:43

They'll be fine.

Jim Collison 6:44

No, it's gonna be great. They are coming on to talk about their strengths-based culture. And they have been -- Southwest has been on fire with, with what they're doing from a culture standpoint. Of course, they have the probably one of the best corporate cultures to work in, and people are -- like everybody wants to work at Southwest. And so this is one of those things we'd really love to have you join us live for. So if you're, if you're hearing this before March 13, come out, get registered, it's on the Eventbrite page. By the way, if you're not following us on Eventbrite, you need to be. It should be required. Go out to gallup.eventbrite.com; create an account, follow us there and get that done. We will have more of those coming as well.

Jim Collison 7:25

And so, I kind of want to warn you: We are ramping up our, our audio, our virtual content, which -- with what's going on globally right now, Austin, may not be such a bad -- like, I didn't know, when we started doing this, that, that people were going to be in a situation where there may be more time at home. Or there may be times where you have more, more time freed up. Or there may be situations where things you were planning to go to don't happen. So we've got lots of content for you that's there. And, and not just English content; we've got some new in-language content. And we continue -- I get suggestions all the time -- "Could you do it in this language? Can you get in that done?" We're continuing as we have resources, as we have talent, as we have availability to do those, we continue to make those available to you.

Jim Collison 8:11

So I'm pretty excited. One of the, one of the outshoots of that is there, there, early, or late last year, we did some work in the Philippines. And that -- the, the strengths movement in the Philippines is alive and well, right. I mean, there's, there's an incredible core of, of folks there. Don't -- and let me end it with this: Don't think we have to do something in your city or in your country to get things done. If you -- lots of times, these, you know, these movements start because a group of people get together and start doing things. So don't feel like you have to wait. If you want to, if you want to get meetups, or if you want to organize gatherings or if you want to do some things, just get that done, for sure.

Austin Suellentrop 8:56

Awesome. Thanks -- thanks, Jim. I appreciate you sharing that. Because, you know, one of the one of the common themes that comes up whenever I'm on here and whenever I'm spending time with you and the coaching community is trying to make sure that all of us remember and can feel connected to the bigger thing that's happening. Right? There's -- there is absolutely momentum happening around the strengths movement around the world. And we understand that; we know that. We're lucky enough to be exposed to some of these incredible success stories and these incredible -- the incredible impact that coaches like, like Ralph are having in his local country, in his local community; that organizations like Southwest are having -- are having in their, in their company and in their culture here. But also trying to turn around and help share that story and trying to help tell the story to the world of what it looks like in these different settings. Right.

Austin Suellentrop 9:55

And I think that's, that's one of the things I take great pride in in my role is trying to be a conduit to all these incredible things we see happening globally with this. So it's important for me that, that we come on here and we remind -- we sort of share that with you. We're excited that Jim has has been able to connect the right people and the right resources to start telling, telling these stories in language so they can be authentic and they can be as true and natural as possible. I'm thinking back -- was it a week or two ago -- when I hopped on Theme Thursday, which, I love, I love to listen to Theme Thursday when I when I travel. It's probably one of my favorite sort of things to do in my car. My kids know Maika and Jim's voice from listening to Theme Thursday in the car, which is kind of funny.

Austin Suellentrop 10:43

But I was on live when, when Maika did one of her just beautiful talent-mindfulness spiels on, on the pebble and the bike tire going in a circle and picking the pebble up and throwing it as far away as you could. And I thought to myself, how incredible would it be if every person globally could hear that message in their language? Right, in a way that would resonate with them the way it resonated with me. Right? That, to me is where we -- where we aspire to be. And we're growing and we're developing and we're, we're able to find advocates and partners in different countries that can help us with that. So it's really exciting. So I'm glad we were able to kick off with that.

Austin Suellentrop 11:32

As we continue to develop our resources and our tools for the community, one of the things we -- as, I don't have to tell this audience this -- one of the things we've been spending a lot of resources on is, is Gallup Access, and, and our tools inside of that platform. And so to keep sort of with, with the in-language theme, right, we launched earlier this year, we got Spanish up and running in terms of all the resource content on Access. We were able to get it translated into Spanish; it's now published out there. This month, by the end of the month, we should have about 60% of all of our resources available in French and German as well.

Austin Suellentrop 12:12

So we're pumping out more in-language tools and resources on the platform, so that as you go out there to get the things you need, that you have, you have that all available to you in these different languages. That's exciting for us. I think the, the platform and what we're doing with Access, again, it's really aimed at a learning -- it's aimed at a learning focus, right, to be a platform that really drives development and interaction and learning, not just a place to go pull reports from. And so with that in mind, we've, we've been focusing a lot on teams on Access and how we support managers and their teams, and how they get content that's valuable to them.

Austin Suellentrop 12:51

So one of the, one of the big things we heard feedback around, you know, at the end of last year, was how action planning and action items may look and how that feels. Where, at the end of February, so just last week, we launched a redesign of our action planning, sort of template on Gallup Access. So for those, those organizations that have subscriptions to Access and are in there using it -- so a lot of our coaches that have, have got subscriptions and are using the sort of full team-based features, there's an enhanced action planning template that's now live that actually feeds direct, recommended actions based upon strengths into it for the managers. It's really an exciting sort of development there. And it's the first phase of a redesign. And we've got, got plans and excitement around unveiling in the -- down the road, a new individual action planning template as well. Right.

Austin Suellentrop 13:45

And, and pulling in the best content we have around what action items from a certain theme perspective may look like, to help nudge and encourage people to take action around their strengths. So I think that that's a big thing coming that's already out there in Phase 1, but continuing to enhance, and focusing on that team component, and how we all interact as a group and as a team. We've got team recommendations in February that launched as well. So a database of being able to say, How can this team leverage if they're high in this domain, low in that domain, what can they be doing about it? Right. So I think it's probably the No. 1 question I've received in my, in my consulting and teaching around strengths over the last decade is, Hey, I love this. What do I do with it? Hey, this is really great, great insight. What do I do about it? We're trying to help build that in to be sort of part of the nature of the interaction with our, with our resources, with our tools is what do you go do about it?

Jim Collison 14:42

Austin, a, a reminder on that, that's available in our in our subscription, the, the action planning pieces come as part of our subscription. It does, just for our certified coaches that are listening, it does, you know, as we think about -- and that's why we want to have this conversation with you around subscription -- if you're working with a pretty large organization, it's probably helpful if they just have their own Access -- that Gallup Access subscription and what they're doing. And it just depends. So have that conversation with us. But there's gonna be some features that are coming where we you might want to just work with us to get them on Access.

Jim Collison 15:17

One of the other things I'm noticing just as a hint is, is don't, don't -- even though we do this on Facebook, don't be people's tech support. We have fixed our, our, our tech support delays, you know, where, where at one point it was taking a while; now it's taking less of a while. And I really mean 1 or 2 minutes. I've been watching the reports, and our Help Desk has really gotten their answer. We are also very, very close -- and I don't have a date for you yet -- but we are very, very close to having that chat turned on 24/7. So yeah, that's coming up as well. And, and I would, I would say by summer, we should have that available for you.

Jim Collison 15:59

So from -- if you're running into problems, if you have questions, it's so much faster now just to call our support. And we have some amazing folks who are seasoned and know what they're doing. And they can help you and they can help you with your account. They can help your customers with their account. So if your customers are calling you because it's erroring out, have them call us. We can troubleshoot it, get their environment just right. We have folks who specialize in helping people get through those, those things, and they're really, really good at it. And so, get to get those number, get those numbers in a spot where you remember them, you know, today you have to go to Access and then click through a support topic and get to the contact. That number doesn't change.

Jim Collison 16:40

So just copy that number, have it available somewhere. Or watch for the chat room to be open; today, those are open business -- pretty much business hours here in the United States. Again, we're working on making that 24/7, so make sure you're having them contact us if you can. We have specialists waiting to help them. And then, if you have any questions on the subscription or the Access pieces, send us an email: coaching@gallup.com. We can get a, we can get a specialist to get back with you, give you a demo, some of those kinds of things. And for larger organizations, it may make sense that they, that they make the purchase into the system. And, and you just help manage from that perspective. So what else, Austin? Anything else?

Austin Suellentrop 17:22

I think, I think the -- that's a good point. I think, we think back to where we were September, October of last year, and some of the things we've learned since then. Right. We -- I think a lot of the issues that were driving people having to call in for support we've either addressed and made easier and fixed some of the broken pieces or things that weren't working like we had intended. But we are -- Jim, myself and then there's a team of us who are sitting down with our client support team on a regular basis: "Hey, what what are the volume issues you're hearing? What are the things people are calling about?" And as a result, we're able to streamline and address those things in a much more effective fashion.

Austin Suellentrop 18:02

Jim and I both love supporting you, our community, the users, I, the people you send links to, that you send the assessments to. We want people to be part of the movement and to use, and to use our platform and to use the -- all the great tools we've built out there. The most efficient way for you to get the kind of help you need, or for them to get the kind of help they need, is to call in. It just is -- that's what, that's what our data is showing us. That's what, that's what the experiential sort of feedback is. So absolutely encourage you to do that. And know that you do have support in multiple places, multiple forms, multiple ways, right? We, we want to make sure that you all know we're here to help. So we're not going to stop answering questions; we're not going to stop answering emails, right. But if you need a quick, fast, in-the-moment thing, that's the best way to go.

Jim Collison 18:50

Yeah, I'm, and I definitely -- with things have picked up. You know, our, our webcast infrastructure has grown 25% this year. And so we are producing more content. There's more things to keep track of or we're trying to provide more things for you to use. That's taking more of my time, and I'm not able to be on Facebook as much. And so it's just a good, just a good opportunity now to begin to switch that over.

Jim Collison 19:14

We've gotten some good and just, just some social feedback from that as well. A couple -- Becca said, I called the Help Desk with a problem/question last week and it was super quick and easy. Yeah, they, they've really streamlined that. Robert says, Help Desk always great, even during the transition, and in Calebe is appreciative of the 24/7 again, not available yet, but they are working on having that available here very shortly. That, to me, that's my big, that's my big win for, for the -- I, I have been pushing really, really hard to get chat 24/7 and as an effective way for you guys to get to us. Austin, we are -- I've never been more excited about where we're headed and what we're doing. For some coaches, you know, we are coming up on a pretty significant milestone again, and we haven't really even made a big deal about it. What's happening here in the next week or so?

Austin Suellentrop 20:06

Yeah, we're going to cross 23 million CliftonStrengths completes globally -- 23 million! And it's crazy to me. I was talking with some friends when I was in Omaha. When I became certified in 2013, we were at 7 million. We were crossing the 7 million mark in 2013. And now here we are, not even 7 full years later, and we're about to cross 23. Right. We've got a shot at hitting 25 by the end of the year.

Jim Collison 20:37

Yeah, that's pretty exciting!

Austin Suellentrop 20:38

That -- and so, if you think back to what, what Don had envisioned and hoped and dreamed of was a million. Like that -- he really thought a million was gonna be a big threshold moment. And so we've already blown past the quantity of people. And it's because of the coaches like we have on, on, that are joining us now that have taken this and run with it, and all, all the great things you're doing, and all the great, you know, workshops you put together and clients you work with and ways you figure out to spread the message. That, that's what really has helped us amp up the global reach of this.

Austin Suellentrop 21:15

So as we think forward to the future, we're going to celebrate every milestone we hit. Right, that's, that's part of my Positivity, right. We got, we gotta, we gotta take a minute to celebrate the things that we -- that deserve celebrating. But I think it helps to keep in position for us, like, how much of an opportunity we have. Once we hit 25, we'll be at 30 before you know it. And then we're turning our eyes to 50. It's just, it's so exciting. And so it really is, I think, a testament to the hard work and commitment and energy of so many people around the world. And, you know, as we think about what we, what happens every time you hit a threshold like that.

Austin Suellentrop 21:55

I was talking with Jim Asplund about this, who's one of my favorite people to talk about strengths and, and the science behind it because he just knows it so intimately well. We know more about people now than we ever have. Because, because we've got so many more people that are part of the movement and taking the assessment and using it, and able to give us feedback, and we can interview them, and we can talk to them; we can study their behavior and study their outcomes. We know more about how strengths really drive impact than we ever have. And that's what's really exciting to me is, the more, the more we can get people on board with this, and then we can connect and follow up with them and see the impact in their life and get their stories and build out case studies. That's so exciting for thinking about how we can continue to build the best tools, the best resources, the best learning opportunities, so that we can really reinforce this and amplify it going into the future. So that that's what gets me -- I got, I got high Futuristic, high Positivity. That, that's what gets me amped is thinking about what it's gonna set us up to be able to do in the future.

Jim Collison 23:02

Yeah, and Austin, remember, I mean, well, it's about systems. It's really the systems, the most important systems are you keeping the conversation going with people.

Austin Suellentrop 23:10

Absolutely.

Jim Collison 23:10

Right? That's really the most important conversation to go. We have some incredible systems here. But I find here at Gallup, what keeps it going is not us logging in and grabbing our All 34 report, but us having these conversations because we've ingrained it in the culture; we talk about it all the time. And it's so weird when I go out, and I just talk to my friends who are not Gallup employees, and I start throwing out these things. And I'm like, you know, that's my Ideation. And I'm like, Oh, they have no idea what I'm talking about. Or if they do, they've watched Theme Thursday. So I'm always ...

Austin Suellentrop 23:40

Yeah, that, so that's, that's my challenge to you, Jim, right, is if you've got people in your life you care enough about to be dropping the line, "It's my Ideation," then you should probably have this conversation with them about their talents and about what that, what it means. Because I've been on, I've been on the record saying this for the most -- the most powerful thing I've ever done with strengths in my, in my life I was having a workshop with my family. It was the most powerful thing I ever did. I asked for it for my birthday one year was that -- was a family strength session. And I facilitated with a bottle of wine and a bottle of bourbon my, my, my brother-in-law, sister-in-law, their spouses and my, my wife's parents, and we spent about 2 hours talking strengths. And so I think, I think being able to take the conversation wherever it matters to you in life. That's the most powerful thing I think you can do.

Jim Collison 24:27

Ralph just talked about that on his version -- when he was on Called to Coach, talking about doing marriage, kind of marriage strength, you know, building strengths into into marriages and working that way. Hey, a couple questions before we go. I don't want to miss this. John had started and asked, So moving forward, will Advice section on Access focus on our Top 10 themes or continue to include all 34?

Austin Suellentrop 24:50

So short-term, there's not gonna be a, you're not gonna see a change in terms of how that looks short-term. Long-term, what we sort of envision in terms of the advice component of it is actually a full blend of your full 34. So it's not just Top 5 blended; it's sort of factoring in if you're high here and low there. Right. So it's a bit of a hybrid, John, between what you're saying there. But, but yeah, that's sort of the future phase development of it.

Jim Collison 25:16

This was, and John asked again, and this was a feature that we really struggled with -- with Gallup Strengths Center that now is so much better in Gallup Access, but he says, As we become more international and work with more international teams, is there a way we can display team strengths in a single language when the assessments are taken in separate languages?

Austin Suellentrop 25:34

Yes. Short answer, "Yes." And John, let me follow -- we can, we can follow up with more details around how you do that and what that looks like. But short answer is "Yes."

Jim Collison 25:43

Yeah, we, and, and don't forget -- this, this, this is not what he's talking about. But don't forget, if you go to Access and go to the upper right-hand corner, there's a language switch up there and there's how many languages now -- it's 30? 29?

Jim Collison 25:58

28 something languages up there. Pretty much most of the ones we've been asked -- people have been asking for are available for you. So if they take it in another language, say they take it in Italian, and you can, you're the coach, but you're, you're in English, you can go see their report in English, they can flip it, you can flip it to Italian, if you want. If you want to go up there and flip it, it'll flip the site and any of the resources we have available in that language will show in that. We don't have all of them for every single language. Of course, that's a lot. But don't forget to do that flip. I'm -- Austin, I'm suppliesed how many --suppliesed? I'm surprised -- I'm surprised how many people miss that. And so don't, don't forget, you can switch that around and see it in any of those languages that are supported. It's available for you.

Austin Suellentrop 25:58
28.

Jim Collison 26:39

So -- and it's, it's generated, that report's generated in that language. So it's there, it's available, you can get access to it. It's pretty cool. So John, thanks for those.

Austin Suellentrop 26:48

Great question.

Jim Collison 26:48

Thanks for those questions as well. And then one final thing before we go. Ralph Williams wants to remind me, we are not growing exponentially. We're not, actually, to be honest, that's not a good term to use. We're still on a linear path. To grow exponentially, we really would need this thing to explode out and see double- and triple-digit growth every single year. OK, that's not minimizing what we're doing. Austin, there was a time I remember when we did less than a million a year. And now we're creeping close to or have gone over that 2 million mark. So it is, it is that -- even though it's linear, that linear is growing each and every year, and it's happening because many of you are out there doing what you do. Anything else? Any final thoughts?

No, thank you for what you do. Keep up the momentum and all you do to help, help support this community, Jim. You're, you're fantastic at what you do. It's fun -- it's always fun for me to watch people who are great at what they do in action. So I watch -- I watched you -- I watch you as much as I can. So keep it up.

I appreciate it. With that, we'll remind everyone to take full advantages of all the resources we have available. Remember, for strengths, if you want to go right to the strengths dashboard, go to gallup.com/cliftonstrengths. You can -- that'll take you directly to the strengths dashboard. If you want to go to gallup.com/access, you can; you're just gonna get the full menu of everything that's out there. And in the future, that may be appropriate. But if you want to go right to the strengths dashboard, gallup.com/cliftonstrengths. While you're there, like maybe this weekend or sometime when you have some time -- you're on a plane or whatever -- you should go through all the resources we have available on that, on that site. Like it is rich. I think, Austin, a lot of folks are missing out. It is rich, rich, rich, including a new teamwork hub that is pretty incredible. And so you want to head out there: gallup.com/cliftonstrengths. If you haven't subscribed on YouTube, do that. If you need to subscribe to this as a podcast, you could do that as well. Both those are available. While you're out at the CliftonStrengths site, sign up for our new CliftonStrengths Community Newsletter. So every month we provide you with some great information, different than the Certified Coaches Newsletter -- that's an additional one as well. That's available for you, just kind of keep you up to date. We've got some great writers who are just doing some incredible work on getting some of those things done for us. So if you have any questions, you can always send us an email: coaching@gallup.com. If you want to attend a course of some kind, our courses globally are always up to date and always listed: courses.gallup.com. Join us in our Facebook group, very thriving Facebook group that's out there: facebook.com/groups/calledtocoach. And if you're not a Facebooker, and that's not such a bad thing, you can join us on LinkedIn if you want to do that as well. All the Europeans are on LinkedIn. So head over to CliftonStrengths Trained Coaches. Just search for that -- ask to be invited to the group, and I'll let you in. And we have some great conversations going on over there as well. For the update -- by the way, we have a Called to Coach this afternoon, if you're listening live. Come back! Sue Bath is coming to -- we have two sessions for you; two speed sessions. You're going to want to come out -- go to the Eventbrite, Eventbrite page: gallup.eventbrite.com. Register real quick and get the calendar thing, so you know what time in your time zone. But it's coming up here in the next couple hours. But we continue to work on these. The next Community Update will be in 2 months. So we'll see you in May. With that, we'll say, Goodbye, everybody.
